Vera Raposo, founder of Your Creative Biz had scheduled to interview book publishing expert Kristen Eckstein when an hour before the interview her kitten knocked her phone off the counter and broke it. To make matters worse, her recording software for Skype wasn’t working. Rather than postpone the interview, which had already been postponed once due to an emergency, Raposo and Eckstein brainstormed another idea: a Skype chat.
Written interviews have been conducted before, and are especially common to magazines, but neither Raposo nor Eckstein had ever seen screenshots of a Skype chat as a blog post or interview. “I’m always game for something new,” said Eckstein.
The result is a fun interview almost as good as readers being a fly on the wall of Raposo’s private Skype chat with Eckstein. Complete with stills of silly emoticons, candid questions and fun banter, the interview was a success.
Raposo and Eckstein both agree it’s better to be creative when circumstances strike than throw in the towel and give up. “If we’d given up or tried to reschedule again, it wouldn’t have been quite as interesting. It was fun to type an interview in realtime and I think it would be a great medium for interviews conducted on Facebook fan pages and social media groups. This format also makes it easy for people to find answers to their questions, and not have to listen to a noisy audio or video,” Eckstein said.
